The 2nd annual Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture offers an opportunity for MedStar Health associates, caregivers, leadership, board and community members, and other key stakeholders, to learn about the latest developments in patient safety and the role that each of us plays in reducing preventable harm. Named in honor of the late professor Esra Bennathan, Emeritus Professor of Political Economy, University of Bristol UK, the Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture will continue a tradition of learning, teaching and sharing, all of which were woven into the fabric of his life.

This year’s lecture will focus on the importance of wellness in health care. While preventable harm remains a leading cause of death in the U.S., we are often so focused on taking care of others, that we forget to care for ourselves, both physically and mentally. As our nation is still battling the most significant public health crisis of our lifetime, it is critical to focus on wellness among healthcare associates. Our associates experience challenging workdays at a demanding pace with emotional intensity. It is vital to support and emphasize the need to care for our caregivers. The program will highlight areas of personal preventable harm that impact healthcare workers, review the impact COVID-19 has had on effective patient care and identify tools that can be used to improve health worker morale.
