Access to healthcare for all Americans has been more than a century old quest, that made signficant progress when the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was enacted by Congress in 2009. On November 10-11, the ACA will be contested in the U.S. Supreme Court, affecting tens of millions of Americans and millions of healthcare professionals. The case could have signficant implications for health coverage, protection for people with pre-existing conditions, and health insurance markets. This will be the third such argument in less than eight years, but it will be the first with a reconfigured Supreme Court, throwing the outcome of the case, and indeed the  ACA, into question.   

The Medical Society of the District of Columbia will host an open heathcare forum with national public health leaders to evaluate the implications for the Affordable Care Act. The forum will take place Thursday, November 12, from 12:00 Noon to 1:30 PM, after the oral arguments, and will include analysis of the proceedings with Professor Sara ROSENBAUM, J.D., of the George Washington University, and Eliot SOREL M.D., former MSDC president. Professor Rosenbaum and Dr. Sorel are co-signatories of the SCOTUS Brief AmicI Curiae filed by national public health leaders in May 2020. PRESENTERS

Eliot Sorel, M.D. 
Dr. Sorel is an innovative global health leader, educator, health systems performance expert, and a practicing physician. He is a professor at George Washington University's schools of medicine and public health. He co-chairs the Metrics Group of the Healthy Brains Global and is a cofounder of the Africa Global Mental Health Institute. Dr. Sorel has served as a subject matter expert on World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. National Institute of Health,(NIH), Fogarty International Center, U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, (NIMH), World Bank Group (WBG), the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), and the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD) projects.

Sara Rosenbaum, J.D.  
Professor Rosenbaum is the Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Law and Policy and Founding Chair of the Department of Health Policy at George Washington University’s Milken Institute School of Public Health. Professor Rosenbaum has devoted her career to health justice for medically underserved populations. Professor Rosenbaum is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, served on CDC’s Director’s Advisory Committee and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice, and was a founding Commissioner of Congress’s Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC), which she chaired from January 2016 through April 2017.
