Seasonal Flu Kills At Least 12,000 in U.S. This Winter
Seasonal flu continues to be a major public health concern, including in the District.
While COVID-19 has stolen the headlines, seasonal flu has ravaged the U.S. this winter. Physicians and their health care teams have to be aware that this heightened flu season may continue into May, and be ready to work with patients to limit risk.
According to the newest CDC numbers, between 22 million and 31 million U.S. residents have contracted seasonal influenza. Of those afflicted, 210,000 have been hospitalized nationwide and at least 12,000 have died. CDC notes the infection rate among children and young adults is higher than normal.
According to the latest DC Health report, 2,511 positive influenza cases have been reported in the District this season. There were 286 new cases reported in the last week. While cases decreased in the past week, the risk remains elevated.
