MSDC installs new president and introduces newly elected board members who come from diverse backgrounds but all share one thing: the Medical Society's mission to make the District the best place to practice medicine.

President and diverse new board prepare for an ambitious year ahead

Last week, the Medical Society of the District of Columbia (MSDC), Washington, D.C.’s leading physician group, officially installed its new president, E.W. Emanuel, MD, MBA, of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group. In a stirring inaugural address, Dr. Emanuel encouraged physicians to not “give up” despite the challenges of practicing during the pandemic. He stated his commitment to the DC physician community and emphasized the advocacy, resources, and camaraderie available through MSDC.

In its first-ever online annual meeting, MSDC also introduced the newly elected members of the Board of Directors. They are listed below with the office they now hold.

The new board members come from a broad range of specialties and practice settings, as well as from diverse backgrounds and age groups, in order to aptly represent the DC physician community. They are committed to MSDC’s mission to make the District of Columbia the best place to practice medicine. Dr. E.W. Emanuel is an Ob-Gyn physician, who joined the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group in July 1999. He received his board certifications from the American Board of Obstetrics-Gynecology and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management.

Dr. Kirstiaan Nevin is Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and a member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Peter Lavine is an orthopaedic surgeon in private practice in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Dr. Raymond Tu is a diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology specialist at the MedStar Medical Group Radiology, who recently completed his term as Chief Medical Officer at United Medical Center. 

Dr. Matthew Lecuyer is an attending at Children’s National Hospital, where he practices pediatric emergency medicine. He is board-certified in General Pediatrics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. 

Dr. Susanne Bathgate is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates.

Dr. Julian Craig is a practicing pulmonologist in Southeast Washington, D.C. He is certified as a Diplomat in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Laurie Duncan received an M.S. in biostatistics and epidemiology from Georgetown University and received an M.B.B.S. in medicine from Newcastle University, located in the United Kingdom.
